The FotoEvidence Association, in partnership with the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP), has launched FotoEvidence Ukraine — an initiative to support Ukrainian photographers and contribute to the preservation of Ukrainian culture. This effort focuses on creating photobooks that document the Russian invasion of Ukraine since 2014, ensuring these records populate libraries and schools and preserve this history for future generations.
The initiative is supported by Open Society Foundations UK and the International Renaissance Foundation.
Since the submission process began in August 2024, over 20 book proposals have been received from Ukrainian photographers documenting the ongoing Russian invasion. After careful deliberation, five authors have been shortlisted for their exceptional contributions to historical documentation: Gera Artemova, Lisa Bukreyeva, Serhii Korovayny, Viacheslav Ratynskyi, and Oleksandr Rupeta.
Two of these works will be published:
Lisa Bukreyeva – Here Build Houses from Ashes
This work explores the daily life of civilians in the de-occupied, front-line territories. The story captures the banality of life in conditions of absolute evil and life contrary to it, where everything looks almost normal and ordinary if you don't look at it closely.
Serhii Korovayny – Love Letter to Donbas
“I was born and raised in the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine. In 2014, my homeland became the epicenter of the Russian-Ukrainian war.”
Drawing from Serhii’s extensive archive spanning from 2014 to the present day, this book narrates the story of places where Russian missile attacks coexist with weddings and birthday celebrations. It delves into themes of love, home, loss, and life amidst the backdrop of war.
Both books, Here Build Houses from Ashes and Love Letter to Donbas, will be published by the end of 2025 in Ukraine and distributed to schools and public libraries across the country.
