Photography has become one of the key ways to capture the pain, resilience and struggle of Ukrainians in 2024. This year, global media giants CNN, Reuters and TIME have included the work of Ukrainian documentarians in their annual best-picture selections. This is a recognition not only of the talent of the authors, but also of the power of visual art, which tells the history of war, life and hope of Ukraine.
2024 in Reuters Photos
Photographers Reuters in 2024, thousands of events were documented around the world. Staff and freelance photographers from 120 countries sent out about 1.6 million images covering news, daily life, tragedies and moments of joy. “Photographers from Reuters were there to capture it all — and much more,” the editorial notes.
The selection pays considerable attention to events in Ukraine. Among other materials, photos of Ukrainian documentarians tell about the life of the country in the conditions of war. The images illustrate the complex realities facing Ukrainian society and capture moments that reflect both the challenges and resilience of the people.
These photographs have become part of the global narrative of the year, giving viewers the opportunity to see how the war affects the lives of Ukrainians and understand the context of events that shape modern history.
“When I photograph soldiers, it's always nice to shoot something unrelated to the war, like a ray of light from their (probably my) “pre-war” life. I remember that the Ukrainian team lost the match, but the guys were still happy,” Reuters quotes Alina Smutko
TIME's 100 Best Photographs of 2024
Every year photo editors TIME choose the brightest images illustrating the key events of the year. According to senior photo editor Kim Bubello, this year's selection is special because of its tension: “These photographers are able to capture the curled sense of time and keep it within the four walls of the frame.” These images capture moments of struggle, expectation and change that defined the past year. Among the selected works there are photos of three Ukrainian authors who convey the reality of life during the war.

Photographers CNN 2024 recorded extremely important and diverse events that shaped the world's agenda. From political upheavals in the United States to the war in Ukraine and the Olympic Games in Paris, their footage covered key moments of the year. As the CNN editorial board points out, this year the approach to preparing the annual selection has changed: “We are very committed to showing the most compelling images of the last 365 days to inform, educate and even inspire.”
Special attention in this selection is attracted by the works of Ukrainian documentarians who recorded the realities of the war. Their images have become part of the global narrative, helping to understand the tragedy and courage of the Ukrainian people. CNN devoted a separate block to Ukraine entitled “Ukraine awaits an uncertain future”, where they summarized the difficulties faced by the country.
The more than 600 mile long front line remains the epicenter of the fighting. According to the text, Ukrainian units “suffer from a lack of manpower and resources”. In August, the only significant achievement was a sudden raid into the Kursk region of Russia, but it failed to stop the gradual advance of Russian troops in the Donbas. November marked one of the most powerful offensives by the Russians since the beginning of the war, as stated by Ukrainian commanders.
In addition to the frontline fighting, Ukraine suffers from constant drone attacks on civilian cities, including Kiev. These strikes are aimed at undermining the morale of the civilian population. Despite significant assistance from the United States during the administration of Joe Biden, the re-election of Donald Trump poses new challenges. During his election campaign, Trump expressed doubts about further support for Ukraine, which could force Kiev to adapt to changes in international politics.
The photos featured in CNN's selection not only tell the story of the war, but also serve as a reminder of its global impact, making Ukraine's struggle visible to the world.
“Everyone smokes right in the dugout. There comes a time when you don't care — everything mixes up — the smell of earth, gunpowder and cigarettes. Tired, dark faces and hands are the fragile line that holds the country,” CNN quoted photographer Yulia Kochetova
ASSOCIATED PRESS
The Associated Press published a selection of photos entitled “AP photos from Ukraine in 2024 convey wartime horror and hope”. The material contains photos of Ukrainian photographers who documented the realities of the war, showing not only tragedies, but also the indestructibility of the spirit of Ukrainians.
“Bombs and rockets have turned residential neighborhoods into fiery hell, and relentless attacks have destroyed homes, hospitals and schools. Evacuation in the frontline zone is tearing Ukrainian communities apart. The elderly are being ripped out of their old homes and neighbors. AP photos convey the grief and poignancy of the funerals of the dead soldiers and families killed in the Russian shelling. Opened coffins, including children's, give an idea of the tragedy,” the Associated Press said.
