From April 7 to 13, 2025, Russia carried out a series of strikes on peaceful cities in Ukraine, proving once again that civilians remain its main target. Despite a temporary decrease in the intensity of shelling in March, this week Russia returned to its typical terrorist attacks using kamikaze drones, bombs, and ballistic missiles. The most high-profile attack was on Sumy on April 13, when 21 people were killed on Palm Sunday.
Changes in tactics and scale of attacks
According to the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW), after massive strikes in mid-February and early March, Russia has moved to less intense but regular attacks, similar to the attacks of January and early February this year. In a report dated April 13, analysts noted a return to the “usual format” of terror.
According to Ukrainian sources and the German publication BILD, the tactics of using Shahed drones have also changed. Russia launches them in dense groups of 10-15 units, keeping them in the air several kilometers away from the targets, and then launches a synchronized attack to overwhelm the Ukrainian air defense system.

Chronology of the week's shelling
April 7.
Russian forces did not carry out a single strike on Ukrainian territory - this pause was an exception against the general background of constant attacks.
April 8
At night, Russian troops attacked Ukraine with an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 46 UAVs. Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Donetsk regions suffered. Air defense destroyed 9 attack drones, and 31 imitators were lost.
April 9
The city of Dnipro suffered the most from a nighttime drone attack. Fifteen people are injured, eight of whom remain in hospital. Destruction is also reported in the Kharkiv region.
April 10
The occupiers attacked Ukraine with “shaheds”. Air defense was operating in many regions. Impacts and falling debris were recorded in Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Poltava region. There is damage to infrastructure and casualties.
April 11
Kharkiv was again targeted by Russian attack drones. More than 20 explosions occurred in the city, 17 of them in the Osnoviansky district. Two people were injured.
April 12
At night, Kyiv comes under a massive drone attack. According to the Air Force, Russia launched 88 UAVs. Of these, 56 were destroyed and another 24 were lost in the area. Three people were injured in the attack. In the Sviatoshynskyi district of the capital, warehouses with food and medicine were on fire. The fire was completely extinguished. These events were captured by photographer Pavel Petrov, who was working at the scene with rescuers.
April 13
On Palm Sunday, the Russian army attacked the center of Sumy with two ballistic missiles. According to the State Emergency Service, 34 civilians, including two children, were killed in the attack, the most tragic episode of the week. Emergency and rescue operations continue at the site of the tragedy.
The attack on Kyiv in the focus of Pavlo Petrov

On the night of April 12, Kyiv came under a massive attack by attack drones. The explosions occurred at approximately 04:22 a.m., just ten minutes after the air alert was announced. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 88 drones at Ukraine, 56 of which were destroyed and 24 more imitators were lost in the area.
One of the targets of the Russians is warehouses in the Sviatoshynskyi district of the capital. Pavlo Petrov, a documentary photographer and spokesperson for the State Emergency Service, recorded the aftermath of the strike at the scene. The photos show rescuers who have been eliminating the consequences of the fire since the morning. One of the warehouse buildings was completely burnt out, and another was heavily damaged.

“Three people were injured as a result of the strike. Fires broke out at two locations. One of them was completely extinguished by 10:00 a.m., while the other was still under construction,” Petrov said. According to him, the warehouses were storing food and medicine.

One of the shots shows rescuers dismantling the burned-out structures of a building. These photos are visual evidence of Russia's targeting of civilian infrastructure.

The weekly shelling is not just a “habit of war” but a deliberate tactic to destroy Ukrainian cities and put moral pressure on the civilian population. Changes in Russian tactics, constant experiments with the types of strikes and the scale of attacks do not change the main thing - Ukraine faces terror every day. Documenting these events is a critical mission. After all, every shot, every fact witnessed is another piece of evidence that will tell the truth when the aggressor denies it again.
