As part of its annual micro-grant program to support photographers, the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers has provided support to photographer Yana Kononova for the implementation of the documentary project Heartfelt Effort, which explores new dimensions of the materiality of war. The project continues Yana's many years of work on capturing the traces of destruction and trauma, this time through a look at the spaces of military equipment repair. It is here, in the shadow of the fighting, that the dents, cracks, and burns on the hulls of vehicles preserve the memory of what they have experienced, and the physical efforts of mechanics and repairmen become part of a shared experience of resistance, recovery, and transformation.
“Heart Effort”
“Heartfelt Effort” continues my previous research on the materiality of war, which focused on the destruction as a witness to the traumatic experience left by war. In expanding on this research, I turn my attention to the locations where reconstruction takes place, in particular the repair of military equipment.
Military equipment repair sites are special spaces where the remnants of destruction-dents, cracks, traces of high temperatures and blast waves-are preserved. These scars bear the memory of the trauma experienced by both the equipment and the people who work with it. The repair process requires enormous physical effort, which is an integral part of the materiality of war. Interacting with damaged materials becomes a testament to how the human body faces the consequences of war, enduring its enormous burden. In this sense, the locations of repair, where the equipment regains its shape, become places of transformation of memory.
I use black and white film and medium- and large-format cameras to create the photographs, which allows me to emphasize the material and physical aspects of these locations.
I am sincerely grateful to the command and staff of the A3336 military unit for the opportunity to work at the locations and for their help with the project, as well as to Ilya Bozhko for his advice and production support. I would also like to express my gratitude to UAPP for their financial support, which made it possible to create the first series of photos.
