Ukrainian director, documentary filmmaker, founder of the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers Mstislav Chernov received the DGA Award from the Directors Guild of America (DGA Awards) for the documentary “20 Days in Mariupol”. As stated in pressservice, Chernov was awarded for “outstanding directorial achievements in documentary film”.
In a speech during the award ceremony, Chernov mentioned daily attacks by Russians on Ukraine, in particular the recent shelling of his native Kharkiv. Then Seven people were killed including three children.

“I'm fully aware of the power of cinema, standing here and looking at you. Cinema helps us all to cope with this sometimes unbearable world, an unfair world, and gives us hope to stop everything bad and move towards a better future,” Chernov said.
Together with him, directors such as Christopher Sharp and Moses Bwayo with the film “Bobby Wayne: The People's President”, Madeleine Gavin - “Beyond Utopia”, Davis Guggenheim - “Unchanging: The Story of Michael J. Fox” and D. Smith with the film — “City of Kokomo”.

Recall, “20 Days in Mariupol” is a film by Ukrainian journalist and photographer Mstislav Chernov. Photographer Yevhen Maloletka and producer Vasilisa Stepanenko worked on the film together with him. The film was created in collaboration with the Associated Press and American documentary filmmakers from Frontline. The journalists arrived in Mariupol just hours before A full-scale Russian invasion. In March 2022, Mstislav Chernov, along with colleagues from the Associated Press, were the only international team of journalists working in Mariupol and sending materials from there. The documentary shows the beginning of a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the lives of peaceful residents of Mariupol under siege, the bombing of the hospital and residential quarters of the city, as well as the places of mass burials. All footage was shot by the team during 20 days in Mariupol. In 2023, the authors of the tape became the winners of the Pulitzer Prize in the category “Service to Society”. In addition to the Oscar, the film was also nominated for a film award BAFTA.
