The Dummy Award is an international competition for the best unpublished photo book layout for photographers from all over the world. In the Lviv Art Library, an exhibition of photobooks from the short list of the competition continues. Previously, the exposition was presented at photo festivals and galleries in Tokyo, Dublin, Ankara, Paris, Berlin, London, Cologne, New Delhi, Istanbul, Kyoto, Rome and other cities. The contest is popular with photographers from all over the world.
“Those models of photo books that win, get the opportunity to be published,” says the head of the Art Library Rostyslav Kuzyk. - We had the opportunity to show 50 books from the shortlist for 2023. These books were on a world tour and visited more than 20 cities in different countries. They finally got to us. We've actually gone a little long way to this. Lviv is the last city in this tour.”
The topics of photo books are varied: from social and political to personal experiences. “As far as I'm concerned, it's more than just photo books. There is probably not one here that is a classic photobook. These, we can say, hybrid formats, these are experiments, they are the search not only for interesting visual language, but also the search for new forms of the embodiment of this visual language,” explains Rostislav.
Photographers from Ukraine also took part in the Dummy Award 2023 contest. The short list includes three photo books by Ukrainians: “Photography Firmly Enters the Everyday” by Anna Pylypiuk and Volodymyr Shipotylnikov; “100 days of war” by Igor Chekachkov and “Loss” by Ekaterina Motilova. The five winners included two of these three books — the work of Anna Pylypiuk and Vladimir Shipotlynikov and the work of Igor Chekachkov.
“Many Ukrainian photographers submitted to this competition, but the three places taken are a very cool result for our country,” says Rostislav, and also calls on Ukrainian artists to join the competition, because participation is free for them.
All 50 books, including the winning books, can be viewed on display at the Art Library until April 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, except Monday. Entrance is free.
The exhibition is organized in partnership with Kassel Fotobook Festival and IST Publishing, which highlights innovative and creative practices in the field of photo books.
