American Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences announced the long-awaited list of Oscar-nominated films. The film “20 Days in Mariupol” by Ukrainian director, documentary filmmaker, founder of the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers Mstislav Chernov was nominated in the category Documentary feature film — “Best Documentary Film”.
This is the first documentary Ukrainian film since independence, which became a contender for such a film award. In addition, the film's Oscar nomination was the first for Associated Press for the entire period of the news agency's existence.
“Mstislav Chernov's horrifying chronicle of the surrounded Ukrainian city and the international journalists who remained there after the Russian invasion was nominated for best documentary, earning the Associated Press its first Oscar nomination in the news organization's 178-year history,” the statement said.
Recall that the tape was created in collaboration with the Associated Press and American documentary filmmakers from Frontline. Photographer Yevgeny Maloletka and producer Vasilisa Stepanenko worked on the film together with Mstislav Chernov. The journalists arrived in Mariupol just hours before A full-scale Russian invasion. In March 2022, Mstislav Chernov, along with colleagues from the Associated Press, were the only international team of journalists working in Mariupol and sending materials from there. The documentary shows the beginning of a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the lives of peaceful residents of Mariupol under siege, the bombing of the hospital and residential quarters of the city, as well as the places of mass burials. All footage was shot by the team during 20 days of stay in Mariupol. In 2023, the authors of the tape became the winners of the Pulitzer Prize in the category “Service to Society”. The film was also nominated for a film award BAFTA.
This year's Oscar ceremony will take place on March 10 in Los Angeles.
