International Foundation World Press Photo announced winners of the most prestigious annual prize in the field of photojournalism. Award-winning images range from devastating conflicts and political upheavals to the climate crisis and the safe passage of migrants.

Ukrainian photographer Yulia Kochetova won the Global World Press Photo Award in the category “Open format”. She presented a photo project War is personal about the Russian-Ukrainian war.

“No award wins a war. But I am given a clear feeling that I am one of those holding our flag. I will do it as much as I can. Glory to the dead, glory to the living heroes. Thank you to those who have protected me and continue to defend my right to life.” commented Julia's victory.

World Press Photo's images document the most pressing issues facing humanity today. This year's competition featured 24 winners, six honorary awards and two special jury awards — all selected by an independent jury of 61,062 works from 3,851 photographers from 130 countries.

“These final selected works are a tapestry of our world today, centered on images that we believe have been created with respect and honesty, that can speak universally and resonate far beyond their origins. “This is an opportunity to praise the work of photojournalists and documentary photographers around the world — done with courage, intelligence and ingenuity — and to highlight the importance of the stories they tell, often in incredible circumstances,” said Fiona Shion, Chair of the Global Jury of the 2024 Contest, commented on the work of this year's winners. Childs, head of photography at The Guardian.

Recall that earlier Julia Kochetova received an award among regional winners. Her photo project War is personal gained championship in the category “Open format” in Europe.

Recall that every year the largest competition in photojournalism and documentary photography World Press Photo selects the best works that reflect the main events and important moments published last year in the world press. The pictures of the winners draw attention to the most pressing problems in the world.

In 2023, the World Press Photo competition won the photo report of a Ukrainian photographer, a member of the UAPP Yevhen Maloletka. One of the works is a pregnant woman who is taken out of the hospital by the Ukrainian military after the bombing. His footage from the destroyed maternity hospital became one of the symbols of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
