Insurance coverage of up to $100,000 for media professionals at war. Who can apply, how and when

Since May 2024, the International Fund for Journalists Insurance (IFSJ) has resumed Acceptance of applications Ukrainian journalists, fixers, photo and video operators who perform editorial tasks in combat zones. This is reported Institute of Mass Information with reference to the Association “Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine”.

Who can be insured?

Fixers, journalists/video operators/editors/photographers of independent Ukrainian media who go on official business trips to combat zones, liberated territories, border territories with Russia and Belarus, frontline territories and have means of protection. Priority is given to those who have undergone safety training and pre-medical care courses.

How to do it?

For how long can I be insured?

From 1 to 20 days per journalist and videographer/editor/photographer who are members of the same team going on a business trip.

What does insurance cover?

Insurance coverage — up to 100 thousand US dollars to reimburse medical expenses in case of damage. In the event of the death of a journalist, the family receives $100 thousand.

Who determines which applications are satisfied?

The IFSJ Coordinating Board considers each application and makes a decision. In the event of a positive decision, the coordinators will necessarily contact the applicant. Due to the large number of applications, the organizers reserve the right not to report a negative decision. The applications of representatives of those media that are virtuous and comply with the Code of Journalistic Ethics are satisfied.

During 2022 and 2023, the International Journalists' Insurance Fund processed 298 media applications for 886 insurance days. During the existence of the project, there were no insurance cases. Questions can be sent to email tetiana.avramenko@gmail.com.
