The documentary film “20 Days in Mariupol” by journalist and founder of the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers Mstislav Chernov entered the lists of Oscar contenders in two nominations: “Best Documentary Feature Film” and “Best International Feature Film”.
On December 21, 2023, the American Film Academy published a list of films that were shortlisted for the Academy Award in ten categories. “Shortlists in two categories. Documentary and International Film. Thank you all. We remember all of them. Take care of yourself. We continue to work,” Mstislav Chernov commented on the news on Facebook.
Photographer Yevgeny Maloletka and producer Vasilisa Stepanenko worked on the film together with Mstislav Chernov. Journalists arrived in Mariupol in just a few hours to a full-scale Russian invasion. In March 2022, Mstislav Chernov, along with colleagues from the Associated Press, were the only international team of journalists working in Mariupol and sending materials from there. The documentary shows the beginning of a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the lives of peaceful residents of Mariupol under siege, the bombing of the hospital and residential quarters of the city, as well as the places of mass burials. All footage was shot by the team during 20 days of stay in Mariupol.
The premiere of the film in Ukraine took place at the Docudays UA festival, where “20 Days in Mariupol” became the best film of the national competition and won the prize of audience sympathy. The film was also shown at one of the main independent film festivals in the United States “Sandens” in the World Cinema Documentary Competition section.
Another documentary about the war in Ukraine was included in the short list of the nomination “Best Documentary” of the 96th Academy Awards. “From Where To” was directed by Polish director Macek Gamela in co-production with Frenchman Jean-Marie Gigon and Ukrainian Anna Palenchuk. The film tells about Ukrainian refugees, whom the director evacuated from the frontline territories after a full-scale attack by the Russian Federation.
Recall that it is from the short lists that the nominations for the Oscar are formed. The results will be announced on January 23 next year, and the ceremony will take place on March 10.
