The main international photo contest World Press Photo announced the regional winners. In Europe, Ukrainian photographer Yulia Kochetova received the award for documenting the Russian-Ukrainian war. Her photo project War is personal gained primacy in the category “Open format”.

“This multidisciplinary presentation of the photographer tells about the war through her subjective experience and at the same time allows her to add more emotion and symbolism than the photographs themselves could convey,” the award's website says.

Yulia Kochetova dedicated the award to people who continue to fight every day, Ukrainian photographers, as well as women in this field. She noted that her work is possible thanks to the Ukrainian Defense Forces, which since 2014 have been protecting the country from Russian occupation.

“I want Ukrainian photography of this war to be remembered as a first-person story. Do not fly a drone. Not a wide frame of graves and bombed streets. In the wide frame, it is easy to lose a person. Just honestly tell one personal story,” said. Julia.
