Roman Pilipey is a Ukrainian award-winning freelance photojournalist based in Kyiv, Ukraine. The first main event he witnessed as a photographer was the Euromaidan revolution in Kyiv, 2013-2014. From 2014 he covered the war in eastern Ukraine and for the next few years Roman’s focus was mainly on the eastern Ukraine situation and its aftermath, while also working in other parts of Ukraine.
In 2017 Roman relocated to Beijing where he worked on stories and covered major news events in China as the staff photographer for EPA agency later becoming the EPA bureau chief for the China region. Throughout his years in China, he has been traveling to almost every corner of the country focusing on human rights stories. Some of the main coverage stories include the situations in Xinjiang and Tibet, as well in 2019 he has been covering the protest movement in Hong Kong, and in 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic in Wuhan, the ground zero of the coronavirus.
For his coverage in China Roman received POY Asia 2022 Photographer of the Year award and was twice shortlisted in 2019 and 2022 for The Guardian Agency Photographer of the year. When the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Roman just finished covering the Beijing Olympic Games. He immediately left China and went to his native country to cover the war. Since then he relocated back to Ukraine, where he works on stories of the ongoing war. In early 2023, after eight years in EPA Roman left the agency to pursue his photographic goals.
Since then he was exclusively working for Getty Images, and nowadays he actively collaborates with the international agency AFP. His photographic works have been published in many global media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Le Monde and many others.
UAPP is an independent association of professional Ukrainian photographers, designed to protect their interests, support, develop and promote Ukrainian photography as an important element of national culture.
UAPP's activities span educational, social, research and cultural initiatives, as well as book publishing.
UAPP represents Ukrainian professional photography in the international photographic community and is an official member of the Federation of European Photographers (FEP) — an international organization representing more than 50,000 professional photographers in Europe and other countries around the world.
