The American Film Academy will reissue a shortened international television version of the Academy Award ceremony, but this time will include the category “Best Documentary”, in which won tape “20 days in Mariupol”, and will also leave a speech by the director, founder of the UAPF Mstislav Chernov. This is written by a news online magazine about television and cinema Deadline.

According to the publication, this decision was made by Disney after the outrage of the Public. The broadcaster was the first to draw attention to the fact that in the international version there is neither this category nor the speech of director Mstislav Chernov. At the time, representatives of Disney Entertainment explained that the short versions of the show have time limits. However, the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting sent a letter to The Walt Disney Company asking to add a fragment with the nomination “Best Documentary” to the international version of this year's Oscar Awards.

Referring to our own sources, Deadline informs that all global Oscar licensees will receive an updated version — not only Ukrainian Public Broadcasting.

Recall, for the first time in history, the Ukrainian film “20 Days in Mariupol” received the Oscar film award. In the first hours after the award, it was possible to record an exclusive interview with director Mstislav Chernov after receiving the Oscar.

What do you know about the film?

The film “20 Days in Mariupol” tells about a team of journalists who at the beginning of a full-scale war ended up in Mariupol and documented crimes committed by Russians against civilians. In March 2022, Mstislav Chernov, along with colleagues from the Associated Press Yevgeny Maloletka and Vasilisa Stepanenko, were the only international team of journalists working in Mariupol and sending materials from there. In 2023, the authors of the tape became the winners of the Pulitzer Prize in the category “Service to Society”. Also, the film “20 Days in Mariupol” won the nomination “Best Documentary” at the prestigious British awards BAFTA Film Awards. In addition, Mstislav Chernov was awarded Directors Guild Award United States for “outstanding directorial achievements in documentary filmmaking.”
