Karina Piliugina is a Ukrainian documentary filmmaker, producer, photographer and a new member of the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers. She is known for her work in the Ukrainener project, the documentary series “Victory Units” and photos that tell about the struggle of Ukrainians during the war. We asked Karina about her work and projects, about what remains behind the scenes — her emotions, experiences and how she gives them advice through the lens of her camera.

Plush toys and broken sunflowers. Downed plane of Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flight in photos by Mstislav Chernov
On July 17, 2014, a passenger plane “Boeing 777” of flight MH17 Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur was shot down in Eastern Ukraine. All passengers and crew died — 298 people. In terms of the number of victims, the plane crash became the largest in the history of Ukraine.

June 9 — the second anniversary of the death of activist and soldier Roman Ratushny. He was remembered as a defender of Protasovy Yar, who fought against illegal buildings. He was an active participant in the Revolution of Dignity and the protests at Bankovaya. With the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Roman Ratushny became a volunteer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was a scout of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade “Kholodnyy Yar”.

The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers is starting to work on the rubric “Is it really?”, where it will check the authenticity of certain manipulations of information, referring to the original source.

Another terrorist act by the Russians in Kharkiv. At midnight on May 31, several explosions were heard in Kharkiv: Russian troops hit S-300 and S-400 missiles on residential buildings from the territory of the Belgorod region.

On the occasion of the Holodomor Remembrance Day, the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers in cooperation with the Center for Austrian-Ukrainian Cultural Studies, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Austria, the Ukrainian Student Society "Sich" in Graz and the Ukrainian Research and Education Center for Holodomor Studies (HREC) created a documentary exhibition "The Holodomor and War.
